The Derby - Skegness "Jolly Fisherman"

On August 3, 1978 20006 & 20176 back down onto Platform 3 to take out the morning departure to Skegness as evidenced by the 'Jolly Fisherman' headboard.

Yarmouth and Llandudno were also regular destinations for the summer only extras. However the Skegness trip was the only one from Derby featuring Class 20's, the others were normally in the hands of Class 25's.

D8006 was delivered September 21, 1957 from Vulcan Foundry at Newton-le-Willows, being tested over Shap prior to acceptance into revenue earning service.

Like many examples this machine spent some time in storage, at Wigston in 1981. Returned to service in March 1982 to Eastfield, along with about ten of her sisters. At the time of its withdrawal at the beginning of October 1990 it was the second oldest mainline diesel locomotive in service, the oldest being sister 20004, which was retired the following week.

20008 & 20030 ease out of Platform 3 on August 2, 1978 with another trainload of day trippers/enthusiasts bound for the scenic & gastronomic delights of Skegness. The somewhat overcast day reveals that all is well with this English summer's day. A look at my notes reveal that these two machines were on this service on July 31st as well.

August 25, 1979, and the Derby - Skegness service is in the hands of somewhat clean 25101 & 25158, although the former has the typical stains around the radiator.
