During the summer of 1975 Derby Works handled its last repairs to the Class 24s. 24052 was one of those final few, seen here virtually ex-works at Cockshute depot September 28th 1975. Less than a year later, during July 1976 24052 was taken out of service and stored at Crewe.

The sixteen year eight month career of 5052/24052 saw allocations to Eastern Region, Scottish Region & London Midland Region depots.

Built Crewe Locomotive Works.
Shortened fuel tank & full size water tank (retained until withdrawn).
Four upper and four lower air filters on non-BIS side, three upper and four lower on BIS side.
Roof modification (above generator/brake cubicle): raised square panel containing the engine exhaust.
Time between last Classified repair and withdrawal: 15 months.
Time between withdrawal and scrapping: 17 months.

Allocations

The frames for D5052 were laid down at Crewe Works during the late summer of 1959, D5052 was new to March (31B) on December 4th 1959. Further transfers were:

January 1961 to Finsbury Park (34G).
October 1966 to Eastfield (65A) on loan, made permanent December 1966.
March 1968 to Carlisle Kingmoor (12A) on loan, made permanent April 1968.
April 1968 to Longsight (9A).
June 1968 to Manchester Division (D09).
September 1968 to Stoke Division (D05).
May 1973 to Crewe.
July 24th 1976 - to unserviceable store.
December 4th 1976 - withdrawn.

Renumbered January 29th 1974.

After withdrawal 24052 was stored at Crewe from May 1976 until May 19th 1977 when it was moved to Oxford, remaining there until May 30th 1977 when it moved to Swindon Works and was scrapped there by the last week of May 1978.

Movement: 24052/77/78/84 Crewe - Oxford - Swindon May 19th-31st 1977.

The allocation histories of 24052, 24053, 24054, 24055 & 24056 are virtually identical, although 24052, 24053 & 24054 had slightly longer careers whilst allocated to Crewe.

D5044 & D5052 were westbound at March on March 5th with a freight.

Condition August: green livery with small yellow warning panels, curved upper corners, yellow panel does not cover frame level stripe, small gap between yellow and stripe; full size water tank, shortened fuel tank, exhaust in original condition, trip cock fitted.

On September 16th D5052 worked the 17.35 Broad Street - Hertford North.

1965
On July 26th D5052 worked the 17.35 Broad Street - Hertford North.

1966
On October 2nd seven locomotives departed Finsbury Park on transfer to Eastfield, the locomotives heading northbound light engines: D5051 & D5052, D5050 & D5055 and D5053, D5056 & D7600.

On May 25th D5052 worked the 09.00 Liverpool - Glasgow as far as Preston. This working was one of the last to be diagrammed for steam haulage, albeit through the end of the winter timetable it was Mondays & Saturdays only, diesels covered the other days.

1967
D5052 worked the 17.35 Glasgow Queen Street - Aberdeen on January 27th.

On August 6th D5052 was stabled at Carlisle Kingmoor.

1971
Condition no month (but probably summer): blue/yellow livery, gangway doors present, shortened fuel tank, full size water tank, no blanking plates fitted, hand/footholds plated over, straight sided sandboxes, three-rung bogie mounted footsteps, (paintwork looks reasonably ex-works).

1972
On May 31st 5052 was noted at Helsby with a freight from the Chester line.

Condition May: blue/yellow livery, gangway doors present, shortened fuel tank, full size water tank, blanking plates fitted, hand/footholds plated over.

1973
On June 2nd the 09.15 Llandudno - Birmingham was worked by 5052.

1974
On November 22nd 24052 had worked the Cambrian line goods to Machynlleth, then to Aberystwyth to work the 18.30 Up mail.

Class 24/25s stabled at Newton Heath depot at 3.30pm on December 20th incuded 24022/25/52 and 25042/54, 25112, 25291/298.

1975
Class 24s noted at Manchester Victoria on March 7th included 24020/023/024/027/052/055 & 24140.

Condition April: blue/yellow livery, gangway doors present, shortened fuel tank, full size water tank, blanking plates fitted, hand/footholds plated over, three-rung bogie mounted footsteps, straight sided sandboxes, No.2 cab roof has no ventilators above cab doors.

On April 18th 24052 & 24063 worked a Bidston Dock - Shotton iron ore train.

24052 was one of the last Class 24s to undergo a Classified repair at Derby Works. This took place during the summer of 1975, by August 24052 was back in service.

1976
On January 24th 24052 was stabled at Wolverhampton.

On March 20th 24052 was stabled at Springs Branch, with no fuel tank.

On April 12th 24052 was noted at Crewe Diesel depot.

During late July 24052 was placed into unserviceable store, an unenviable situation for a locomotive that was not even a year out of a Classified repair at Derby.

24052 was withdrawn on December 4th 1976.
