During its career of nineteen years and six months D5199/25049 was allocated to a variety of London Midland depots and two Scottish Region depots.

Built: BR Derby Locomotive Works.
Boiler equipped.
Dual brake equipped (1978).
Yellow cab front includes cab roof guttering (Crewe 1975).
Center lampbracket & other fittings removed.
Angled strip at bottom of cab doors.

25049 was the 209th Class 25 withdrawn, one of five retired during January 1984.

25049 moved to Derby Works by November 1983 having sustained collision damage. After withdrawal it remained at Derby Works until moved to Swindon Works on February 5th 1985 (consist details below) and scrapped there by the first week of June 1985.

On Sunday July 5th stabled at Nottingham were: D5193, D5199, D5203, D5224, D5231, D5239, D5258, D5264, D5289, D7568, D7583, D7585, D7590 & D7591.

1966
On February 13th D5199 was noted at Holbeck.

On the morning of February 27th D5199 was light engine at St Pancras.

At the beginning of its recorded passenger workings D5199/25049 worked a couple of roundtrip Nottingham - Llandudno Town summer dated workings on June 25th 1966 with D7596.

On the evening of August 18th D5199 was at Rotherham Masboro with an up freight 5M91.

1967
On July 29th D5199 & D7589 worked the summer dated roundtrip Nottingham - Llandudno Town.

1968
On the afternoon of June 8th D5199 & D7548 were stabled at Stockport, keeping company with condemned 48745, 44855 & 44868.

A glorious summers day finds 5199 heading south past Howe & Co Siding Signal Box with a train of steel on June 10th 1969. The warning panel reflects a time when Derby Locomotive Works included painting of the valencing in yellow, this panel also has the squared upper corners.

1970
The 17.45 Manchester Victoria - Glasgow Central was worked to Preston by 5199 on January 16th.

5199 was the Manchester Victoria pilot on March 12th & 13th (the duty being shared with two Class 08s).

On the evening of June 30th 5199 was at Preston with an down parcels.

Condition August: green livery with frame level stripe, small yellow warning panels, square upper corners, bottom of panel covers frame level stripe, gangway doors fitted.

1972
At about 7am on February 17th 5199 & 5203 were noted passing Manchester Victoria with an up freight (6H62).

5199 was the Manchester Victoria banker (T43) on March 7th, 8th & 9th. At about 7am on March 13th 5199 was noted passing Manchester Victoria with a down van train (4M03).

At about 11am on May 5th 5199 & 5200 were noted at Kidsgrove with the 1X01 10.20 Congleton - Crewe Royal Train. At Crewe 216 & 313 were to take the train to Runcorn(?).

On July 2nd 5199 was noted at Preston station with a train load of electrication materials for use in the station area.

After five years of no recorded passenger workings, on July 20th 5199 & 5212 worked the 10.30 St. Pancras - Derby throughout. Nine days later on July 29th 5199 & 5211 worked the 09.20 Manchester Piccadilly - Yarmouth to Lincoln Central, returning with the 09.28 ex-Yarmouth.

Condition July: blue/yellow livery, gangway doors in place, three electrification flashes on cab front.

5199 was on empty coaching stock duty at Liverpool Lime Street on October 11th, 12th & 13th.

1973
5199 was the Manchester Victoria banker (T43) on January 31st.

5199 was the Manchester Victoria banker (T43) on March 26th.

5199 was on empty coaching stock duty at Manchester Piccadilly on April 7th.

On May 28th 5199 & 5190 worked a Cleethorpes - Aberystwyth from/to Wolverhampton.

On August 28th 5199 was eastbound at Chinley with ICI limestone hopper empties for Tunstead.

On November 17th 5199 was on empty coaching stock duty at Manchester Piccadilly.

1974
25049 was parked at Didcot on June 18th.

Two roundtrip Manchester Piccadilly - Lincoln Central for Yarmouth workings took place during 1974, on July 6th with 25051 and on August 17th with 25056.

25049 was on empty coaching stock duty at Liverpool Lime Street on January 8th. On January 26th 25049 & 25208 were noted at Manchester Victoria with the 9T06. On January 27th & 30th 25049 was noted at Manchester Victoria.

An excursion from St Pancras to Southport on February 1st was worked from/to Wigan Wallgate by 25049 & 25141.

From March - June 25049 was undergong repair at Crewe Works. It was noted that at this time the bogies carried the two rung footsteps and different styles of sandboxes on each side.

Condition June: blue/yellow livery, roof guttering above cab windows painted yellow, blanking plates fitted, hand/footholds plated over, straight sided sandboxes, two rung bogie mounted footsteps, No.1 cab front - center lampbracket fitted but other fittings removed.

On July 7th 25049 worked a Lincoln - Whitemoor freight. On July 19th 25049 & 25088 worked the 09.20 Manchester Piccadilly - Yarmouth to Lincoln Central returning with the 09.30 ex-Yarmouth.

A month later on August 23rd 25049 & 25102 worked the 08.00 Walsall - Yarmouth to Norwich, returning with the 14.15 Yarmouth - Derby from Norwich.

On October 25th 25049 was called to Stoke-on-Trent with a breakdown train after Class 40 No.40190 ran away with the 9F04 Toton - Garston passing Foley, running into a preceding Liverpool bound parcels train (4F02). The collosion would result in the withdrawal of 40190.

On the afternoon of April 11th 25049 & 25073 were stabled at Banbury.

On May 10th 1976 25049 worked the daily Whitemoor – Kings Lynn freight round trip.

On May 20th 25049 was southbound at Chesterfield with a loaded coal train.

On June 26th 25049 worked the summer dated roundtrip Nottingham - Llandudno Town service. Two days later (28th) 25049 worked an early morning roundtrip Derby - Matlock service. On July 10th 25049 & 25117 worked the Derby - Norwich - Yarmouth - Norwich - Walsall diagram. The next day (11th) the same pair worked the 'Torbay Explorer' railtour from Birmingham New Street to Severn Tunnel Junction (outward leg only?). 25049 & 24134 were noted on the Bidston Dock - Shotton iron ore circuit on the afternoon of July 26th.

At the end of the summer 1976 timetable 25049 was transferred to the Scottish Region.

1977
With six years spent at either Eastfield or Haymarket 25049 would cover many of the run of the mill Scottish passenger workings.

On April 13th 25049 was stabled at Inverness.

On April 16th the 20.10 Perth - Edinburgh was worked by 25064 & 25049. The next day (17th) the 19.10 Glasgow Queen Street - Dundee was worked by 25049.

On May 7th a long distance excursion ran from Basingstoke to Oban/Mallaig. For the run from Mossend to Oban 25049 & 27007 were in charge. From Oban the excursionists sailed on the RMS Columba to Mallaig, to be greeted by their train. It is believed 25049 & 27007 worked the stock through to Fort William and took the train back to Mossend.

The 13.38 Dundee - Glasgow Queen Street was worked by 25049. On May 28th 25049 was noted on an unidentified passenger service at Gleneagles.

The 21.40 Edinburgh - Carstairs was worked by 25049 on September 6th. Two days later (8th) 25049 worked the 17.38 Dundee - Glasgow Queen Street.

25049 was stabled at Haymarket on September 17th.


25049 & 27036 at Haymarket on the late afternoon of September 17th 1977. 25049's last repaint had been at Crewe Works, revealed here by the yellow cab roof guttering and the white cabfront handrails.

1978
25049 was stabled at Perth on April 17th.

A rescue job took place on July 17th when a northbound Inverness service failed behind 47120 at Aviemore, 25049 took over to Inverness. The following month on August 4th 1978 the 08.54 Stirling - Inverness motorail failed south of Dalwhinnie, 25049 pushed the service to Dalwhinnie, where 37219 took over from the failed 47336.

1979
On the morning of June 4th 25049 & 27104 were stabled near Stirling station.

On August 27th 25049 was noted at Keith with a freight.

The 08.44 Glasgow Queen Street - Dundee was worked by 25049 on September 22nd.

On October 1st the 19.40 Carstairs - Edinburgh was worked by 25049.

1980
25049 was stabled at Eastfield on February 10th.

On April 28th the 21.40 Edinburgh - Carstairs was worked by 25049.

On May 9th the 17.24 Edinburgh - Dundee was worked by 25049.

Another rescue job took place on July 10th when the 13.35 Glasgow Queen Street - Aberdeen with 40066 failed near Perth. 25049 took the train on to Dundee where the service was terminated. Two days later (12th) the 08.10 Glasgow Queen Street - Scarborough was worked to Edinburgh by 25049.

On July 31st 25085 & 25049 were light engines at Haymarket station.

25049 was stabled at Haymarket on September 27th.

The last working for 1980 was deputising for a diesel multiple unit, on November 3rd 25049 worked the 07.20 Stranraer Harbour - Glasgow Central.

1981
On January 10th 25049 was light engine at Keith.

On the evening of February 8th & 9th was station pilot at Edinburgh Waverley.

On February 18th 25049 was noted at Haymarket.

On March 1st 25049 was stabled at Haymarket.

On March 14th 25049 was light engine at Edinburgh Waverley.

On a snowy March 22nd 25049 was receiving attention at Haymarket.

On the evenining of March 28th 25049 was at Edinburgh Waverley with passenger stock.

On April 14th 25049 worked the 17.15 Dundee - Perth. 25049 & 25064 were stabled at Inverness on a wet April 30th.

On June 27th 25049 & 25292 were light engines at Edinburgh Waverley.

On June 29th 25049 worked a Mossend - Aberdeen freight comprised of five bogie bolsters loaded with pipes.

On June 30th 25049 worked the 17.15 Dundee - Perth.

On July 23rd 25049 worked the 07.39 Dundee - Glasgow Queen Street.

On the evening of July 31st 25049 was at Edinburgh Waverley with a short parcels train.

The 05.55 Stirling - Edinburgh 25049 Dundee and the 07.39 Dundee - Glasgow was worked by 25049 on July 23rd.

On August 6th 25049 worked the 08.40 Glasgow Central - Carlisle. 25049 was stabled at Kingmoor on August 14th. On August 15th 25049 & 27041 worked the 01.20 Stranraer Harbour - Blackpool North to Carlisle. Finally on August 22nd 25049 worked the 20.50 Carlisle - Perth forward from Mossend Yard.

The 06.49 Dundee - Glasgow Queen Street was worked by 25049 & 25244 on September 4th.

On the afternoon of September 14th 25049 was noted at Dundee.

On October 9th 25049 worked the 21.20 Dundee - Edinburgh. 25049 was stabled at York depot on October 24th (coupled to 25138?). On October 26th (also reported as 28th) the 22.06 York - Shrewsbury was worked to Leeds by 25049, at Leeds 40167 took over.

1982
On June 12th 25049 & 25168 worked the 10.10 Euston - Aberystwyth forward from Birmingham New Street, but 25049 failed at Wolverhampton and was removed at Shrewsbury.

On the late afternoon of July 3rd 25049 was noted at Bletchley, 25179, 25249 & 25313 at Willesden and 25289 at Euston.

The afternoon Aylesbury - Northampton vans was worked by 25049 on July 20th. On July 30th the 13.10 Euston - Birmingham New Street with 86213 was dragged between Nuneaton & Birmingham New Street, having been diverted due to a tanker on fire at Coventry.

25049 was stabled at Aberystwyth on August 21st, possibly attached to some freight wagons. On the morning of August 24th 25049 was stabled at York and later worked the 16.05 Leeds - Carlisle.

25049 was stabled at Motherwell on September 8th.

A roundtrip Birmingham New Street - Nottingham football special on October 16th was worked by 25049 & 31248.

On December 14th 25049 was noted at Aberystwyth with a permanent way train (is this the same working as on August 21st?).

25049 was stabled at Banbury on Christmas Eve.

During the last week of the year on December 28th the 09.50 Newcastle - Poole with 47529 was assisted between Banbury & Reading by 25049.

1983
On January 29th 25049 was stabled at Nuneaton.

The final recorded passenger workings for 25049 took place during 1983. On March 12th the 12.27 St. Pancras - Sheffield required assistance from Wellingborough to Leicester by 25049 after 45019 had failed. 25049 was stabled at Wellingborough depot on March 13th. On March 24th 25049 & 25086 worked the 8M20 Acton - Toton. 25049 was noted northbound at Leicester with loaded ballast wagons from Croft on March 25th.

25049 was stabled at Bescot on May 21st.

On May 31st 25049 was noted at Helsby with a mixed freight.

On June 17th 25049 was northbound at Warrington Bank Quay with a train of chemical tanks.

25049 was stabled at Buxton depot on June 19th.

On October 13th the 11.15 Bangor - Scarborough with 45022 failed at Holywell Junction, 25049 assisted from there to Manchester Victoria, being noted 50 minutes late at Chester. Finally on October 17th 25049 worked the 08.05 Liverpool - Newcastle between Manchester Victoria & Leeds.

On October 26th 25049 was noted at Sileby with a three vehicle Research Department train.

On November 3rd 25049 was southbound at Bescot with seven loaded high sided coal wagons.

1984
25049 was withdrawn on January 8th 1984. (The main generator from 25049 would live on for a short while longer when it was placed in 25037 at Derby Locomotive Works during March 1985).
