A fine view of 25061 and a lengthy train of covered hoppers at Westwood, between Wigan and Springs Branch on October 18th 1977. The view is looking north towards Wigan North Western, the train is on the Up Fast. The Civil Engineer's Canal sidings are visible to the left in the distance, where another Class 25 seems to be shunting.

The seventeen year career of D5211/25061 was spent allocated to LMR depots, including a lengthy stay at Longsight.

D5211 was new to Toton (18A) on June 29th 1963. Further transfers were:

July 1963 to Cricklewood East (14A).
September 1963 to Cricklewood West (14B).
January 1965 to London Midland Midland Lines (LMML).
February 1968 to Longsight (9A).
June 1968 to the Manchester Division (D09).
May 1973 to Longsight.
May 1976 to Crewe.
May 1977 to Scottish Region whilst under repair at Derby Works, but upon outshopping it remained allocated to Crewe.
August 1980 to Longsight.
Withdrawn November 2nd 1980.

Renumbered May 30th 1974.

25061 was the 53rd Class 25 to be withdrawn, one of seventeen Class 25s withdrawn during November 1980.

After withdrawal 25061 was moved to Swindon Works by January 14th 1981 and scrapped by the middle of March 1983.

Highlights

1963
D5211 was noted ex-works at the Derby Test House on June 22nd.

Visitors to Derby Works during July found the new deliveries featuring a yellow safety/visibility paint scheme added to the cab fronts.

Condition new: green livery with small yellow warning panels, curved upper corners, panel covers frame level stripe, no blanking plates, hand/footholds present, straight sided sandboxes, three-rung bogie mounted footsteps, engine exhaust located above engine room, steam style shedplate mounted below builders plate.

On July 29th D5211 worked the 11.20 Brent sidings - Ripple Lane mixed freight.

1964
Stabled at Cricklewood on Sunday November 15th were D5194, D5204, D5206, D5211, D5213, D5214, D5217, D5218 & D5219.

1965
During March driver training continued on the York to Scarborough line with Holbeck Peaks and Midland Type 2s featuring frequently, noted were D5183, D5191, D5192 & D5211.

The 07.15 Glasgow Queen Street - Dundee and the 12.00 Dundee - Glasgow Queen Street were worked by D5211 on May 29th.

On July 24th the roundtrip summer dated Nottingham - Llandudno Town was worked by D5211.

On August 13th the 17.37 Derby - St. Pancras was worked by D5211.

1966
On the afternoon of February 27th D5211 was stabled at Derby.

1967
On the afternoon of March 25th D5081, D5211 & D5284 were stabled at Crewe North.

On the afternoon of July 4th D5211 was stabled at Derby.

1968
The 09.00 Liverpool Exchange - Glasgow Central was worked to Preston by D5211 on May 2nd.

On the morning of May 11th D5211 was southbound at Manchester Piccadilly with a freight (5K10).

On Sunday May 12th D5098, D5211 & D7624 were stabled at Patricroft shed.

On July 27th a Manchester Victoria - Filey Holiday Camp was worked by D5211.

1969
The 10.00 Sheffield - Llandudno with 5211 on June 28th was diverted via Romiley - Guide Bridge - Stockport - Northenden Junction due to a derailment near Disley tunnel.

5187 & 5211 were the Manchester Victoria pilots on November 25th.

1970
The 16.25 York - Newcastle parcels was noted with a variety of power through out the month, with 5211 noted on May 22nd.

1971
At about 6pm on June 17th 5211 was noted passing Manchester Exchange with a down van train.

At about 1.30pm on July 4th 5211 was noted eastbound at Chester with a failed empty diesel multiple unit for Manchester.

1972
At about 7.30am on May 31st 5211 was noted passing Olive Mount Junction with an up freight.

On June 17th the Walsall - Norwich (for Yarmouth) Norwich - Derby diagram was worked by 5211 & 7517.

The 09.20 Manchester Piccadilly - Yarmouth, to Lincoln Central and the return 09.28 Yarmouth - Manchester - Piccadilly from Lincoln Central were worked by 5211 & 5212 on July 1st, 5211 & 5199 on July 29th and 5211 & 7598 on August 5th.

At about 6pm on August 11th 5211 was noted passing Manchester Victoria with an up freight. At about 6pm on August 14th 5211 was noted at Manchester Victoria preparing to work a down van train (4P03). At about 6pm on August 22nd 5211 was noted passing Manchester Exchange with a down van train (4P05).

At about 6pm on October 3rd 5211 was noted passing Manchester Victoria on an up freight. At about 7am on October 5th 5211 was noted passing Manchester Victoria with a down van train (4P03).

1973
On February 17th an Oldham - Hull rugby charter was hauled roundtrip (?) by 5211 & 7548.

5211 was on empty coaching stock duty at Liverpool Lime Street on April 11th, 13th, 16th, 17th, 19th & 24th.

5211 was on empty coaching stock duty at Liverpool Lime Street on June 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 11th, 12th, 13th & 14th.

On June 23rd 5211 & 7594 worked the 1E34 09.20 Manchester Piccadilly - Yarmouth to Lincoln Central, returning from there with the 1M74 09.28 Yarmouth - Manchester Piccadilly.

On the evening of July 7th 5211 was noted at Northwich.

5211 was on empty coaching stock duty at Liverpool Lime Street on December 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 17th, 18th & 20th.

1974
5211 was on empty coaching stock duty at Liverpool Lime Street on January 3rd.

On September 7th 25061 & 25147 worked the 09.19 Manchester Piccadilly - Yarmouth to Lincoln Central, returning from there with the 09.15 Yarmouth - Manchester Piccadilly.

1975
On February 7th 25061 was noted at Manchester Victoria with the 5E26 and later that day the 4J10.

On March 5th 25061 was noted at Manchester Victoria with the 4J10.

At noon on May 30th 25061 was at Stockport with one parcels van.

25061 was on empty coaching stock duty at Liverpool Lime Street on June 17th.

On July 12th 25061 & 25292 worked the 09.20 Manchester Piccadilly - Yarmouth to Lincoln Central, returning from there with the 09.30 Yarmouth - Manchester Piccadilly.

25061 very much ex-Derby Works at Springs Branch, probably during the early summer of 1975.

25061 was the Manchester Victoria banker (T42) on August 7th & 11th. 25061 was on empty coaching stock duty at Liverpool Lime Street on August 14th.

1976
On March 3rd 25061 was noted at Broad Green with two parcels coaches.

The 12.42 Manchester Victoria - Llandudno Town and the 18.42 Llandudno Town - Manchester Victoria were worked by 25061 on July 16th.

On July 25th 25061 was noted at Crewe.

1977
From November 1976 to June 1977 25061 was under repair at Derby Locomotive Works following accident damage to at least one cab. This was at a time when accident damaged Class 25s were liable to be withdrawn if accident damage was incurred (25030, 25174). However 25061 was about eighteen months out of a previous repair, which may have influenced the decision to effect repairs. When finally outshopped the centre lampbracket and other fittings were removed from each cab front.


A rather battered 25061 undergoes repair at Derby Works on January 8th, 1977, at an estimated cost of £28,000.

On August 7th the 'Cambrian Coast Express' railtour from Bristol Temple Meads to Porthmadog was worked roundtrip Machynlleth - Porthmadog by 25061 complete with GWR style 'Cambrian Coast Express' headboard.

On August 27th 25061 was stabled at Holyhead.

25061 was active on the Crewe - Cardiff services on November 22nd, 23rd & 26th.

25061 was active on the Crewe - Cardiff services on December 3rd, 6th, 10th & 21st.

1978
24023 & 25161 were noted at Bidston sidings on the afternoon of January 27th with an iron ore working.

25061 became a regular on the Crewe - Cardiff services being noted on January 28th, February 2nd & 11th, March 18th, 22nd & 29th, April 8th, 15th and May 27th.

The 09.42 Llandudno Town - Manchester Victoria was worked by 25061 on June 23rd.

On June 28th a Holyhead service arrived at Llandudno Junction behind 40026 with a broken center cab window, 25061 took the train forward.

On July 25th the 09.55 Manchester Victoria - Blackpool North and the 12.45 Blackpool North - Manchester Victoria were worked by 25061.

25061 was active on the Crewe - Cardiff services on August 5th, 7th, 24th & 26th, on the latter date double heading one service with 25224.

On September 7th 25061 worked the 16.00 Crewe - Cardiff.

On September 9th 25061 worked the 06.00 Crewe - Cardiff. A week later on September 16th the 'Three Way Special' railtour from Marylebone to Rotherwood was worked from Marylebone to Nuneaton by 25061 & 25245.

25061 was active on the Crewe - Cardiff services on October 25th, November 2nd & 26th, December 3rd, 11th and a snowy December 30th.

1979
On January 1st 25061 worked the 16.00 Crewe - Cardiff.

25061 was stabled at Wrexham on a wintry February 20th, along with 24081.

25061 was noted on the Crewe - Cardiff services on March 9th & 10th. On the morning of March 30th 25061 was stabled at York depot and later noted southbound at Cudworth with ballast wagons.

25061 was noted on the Crewe - Cardiff services on May 7th, 17th, 18th, 19th & 21st.

25061 was stabled at Cockshute on May 12th & 13th coupled to 25139.

On June 23rd 25061 & 25123 worked the Derby - Norwich - Yarmouth - Norwich - Walsall diagram.

On September 21st 25061 worked the 16.02 Crewe - Cardiff.

On September 22nd 25055 & 25061 worked the 07.50 Cardiff - Crewe and the 12.25 Crewe - Cardiff, 25061 returned north alone with the 17.10 Cardiff - Crewe.

25061 was noted on the Crewe - Cardiff services on September 22nd, 24th-27th. On the morning of September 29th 25061 was noted at Romiley on down hoppers.

25061 was noted on the Crewe - Cardiff services on October 9th, 10th & 14th, November 3rd, 9th, 10th, 11th, 13th, 14th, 17th, 18th and December 15th.

1980
Class 25s stabled at Leicester shed on the afternoon of January 13th included 25053, 25061, 25122, 25126, 25137, 25152, 25291, 25298 & 25303.

25061 was noted on the Crewe - Cardiff services on February 19th, 20th & 21st and March 5th.

25061 was noted on the Crewe - Cardiff services on April 5th, 6th, 10th and 11th.

25061 was noted at Cardiff Canton on April 19th.

25061 was noted on the Crewe - Cardiff services on June 26th and July 4th.

On August 9th the 18.08 Penzance - Leeds was worked forward from Birmingham New Street by 25061 & 25222.

Class 25s stabled at Springs Branch on the afternoon of August 23rd were 25047, 25061, 25192, 25219, 25287 & 25325.

On the evening of September 27th Class 25s noted at Newton Heath depot were 25039, 25061, 25100 & 25215.

On September 28th 25061 worked the 11.55 Manchester Victoria - Holyhead.

On October 11th 25061 worked an evening Bangor - Manchester Victoria service (19.25 off Chester?).

25061 was withdrawn on November 2nd 1980.
