The demise of 25066

The locomotive was taken out of service after suffering a main generator flashover, withdrawal coming on June 21, 1981. After a period of store at Toton the machine was removed to Derby Works for component removal and final breaking up of the unsalvagable remainder. After spending eighteen months in the Works deadlines a final assault was made on reducing the shell and bogies to pieces of scrap capable of being melted down and reused. The above view shows 25066 and three sisters at the back of Derby Works awaiting final demoliotion.

Demolition has finally begun, with the cutters working on the cab first. All the workshops seemed to handle the cutting of the locomotives in a slightly different fashion.

With the cab and one side completely gone, the remaining side is toppled onto the remains of the locomotive.

Looking now from the other end reveals a pretty much intact cab. However at the other end of the locomotive the frame & floor is all gone and work has commenced on cutting up the bogie.

The cutters have just started work on one of the bogies. Just above the bogie appears to be two sections of cab floor, one with a buffer attached, and a single wheelset.

By this time recognizable parts are almost gone, here remain parts of the bufferbeam and cab floor. The next machine in line was now not far from its demise.
