D5150 was noted at Darlington Works during August, whilst D5149 was received here during October with collision damage, remaining here until at least February 1962.
Gateshead's Type 2's now held a virtual monopoly on the local trip freights, frequently assigned
to the Berwick, Carlisle, Thornaby & York workings. The Carlisle trips included two parcels workings, one of which returned on the 2.50am Carlisle - Newcastle passenger. They also frequently enjoyed outings on the 9.18am Newcastle (6.55am ex York) - Edinburgh, returning with the 2.25pm ex Edinburgh. From April 16 - 19 this turn was powered by D5147, 5097, 5104 & 5148.
D5150 was at Darlington Works during June.
1963
On July 27th D172 on a Peterborough – Edinburgh passenger failed at Aycliffe, assistance arrived in the shape of D5103 & 5150, complete with brake tender! D264 was waiting at Newcastle to replace all three machines.
D5149 was noted at Darlington Works from October 1963 to February 1964, D5147 was noted here during November.
1964
D5148 was at Darlington during January & February.
1965
In the course of berthing its train off a Newcastle - York service on June 15th D5149 propelled the stock into an approaching Scarborough - Leeds dmu at the north end of York station! The slow speed collision derailed both vehicles involved, with the DMU suffering damage to the driving cab, the front part of the passenger compartment and underframe.
D5147 was at Darlington during September whilst D5148 was at Derby for repair during October.
1966
D5149 visited Derby during September & October.
1967
D5148 was noted during February at Derby Works, whilst D5147 was present in March.
During 1967 double headed Gateshead Type 2’s were again diagrammed to work the Saturday’s only Newcastle - Ayr - Stranraer passenger in both directions. So noted in June & July were D5097/5112 (24th), 5149/5112 (1st), 7601/5149 (8th), 7611/5051 (15th) & D5101/5112 (22nd), ScR examples filled in, especially on the eastbound runs after failures had occurred. These workings must be considered one of the more interesting service/routes worked by the Class 24's, regretably there seems to be little photographic record of these workings.
The final summer working of the Saturday’s only Stranraer – Newcastle passenger occurred on September 2nd with Gateshead’s D5150 & 5147 in charge.
1968
The north-west’s parcels trains were gradually transitioning from steam to diesel - the afternoon Leeds City - Patricroft became a regular Holbeck Type 2 working, noted in January were D5147 (10th), D5096 (12th) & D7573 (26th).
Visitors to Derby included D5150 in February & D5147 in April.
After calling Gateshead home for seven years 5147 - 5150 were allocated to Leeds Holbeck (55A) during September.
A treat for D5149 on September 19th was to take charge of a two coach special conveying ER Board members on an official visit to Lynemouth Colliery. The special ran from Newcastle and involved the use of NCB rails between Woodhorn & Lynemouth.
1969
February 7th proved to be a day of heavy snowstorms, with much widespread disruption throughout the country. On the Woodhead route the Manchester - Sheffield electric service encountered delays, diesels taking over a number of the services. East of the Pennines delays occurred and services were amended to fill in the gaps. The 21.50 eight coach York - Aberystwyth mail was surprisingly hauled by 5150, covering for a local service between Leeds & Huddersfield.
Noted at Derby Works during March was 5148, whilst Glasgow Works worked on 5150 in October.
The summer only passenger workings between Newcastle, Ayr & Stranraer continued to be diagrammed for Type 2’s. The 23.45FO Newcastle - Stranraer and the 13.50SO return working brought the following machines in July: 5188/5190 (5th), 5147/5281 (12th), 7555/7564 (19th) and 5182/5196 (26th). This service had seen Class 40’s in 1968, though these had not ventured beyond Ayr due to lack of driver knowledge on the Stranraer line. Loads varied between nine & twelve coaches.

1970
5150 was at Derby during January, whilst 5148 spent August to October at Glasgow Works.
The last summer season working of the 09.25 Scarborough - Manchester ran on September 5th behind 5182 whilst the 11.00 (SO) Filey - Huddersfield was noted behind 5147.
1971
5150 was noted at Glasgow Works during February.
Easter 1971 had been marred by an ongoing ASLEF work to rule. Amongst other issues crews were refusing to operate locomotives which did not carry a supply of ear protectors. These uncertain conditions hampered the promotion of the many excursions over the long Easter weekend, whilst many did not run, those running tended to be lightly loaded. One that did run was on Easter Monday, April 12th, with 5150 hauling the 1G08 09.30 Castleford - Scarborough.
As part of the reshuffling of the fleet in October 5147 - 5150 moved to the Scottish Region to assist in the withdrawal of the remaining NBL & Clayton products. 5147 & 5148 moved to Polmadie (66A) whilst 5149 & 5150 moved to Eastfield (65A).
1972
When Polmadie closed during March 5147 & 5148 moved to Eastfield (65A), joining 5149 & 5150.
On September 20th 5149 caught fire on an Auchinleck - Killoch colliery coal train, it was quickly moved to Glasgow Works but was condemned during October, other ScR Class 24's withdrawn that month were 5067/68, & 5114.
1973
5150 visited Glasgow Works during February.
On May 12th Glasgow Works held its first Open Day, remarkably there were sixty four diesels on display that day, although twenty seven of those were condemned Claytons. Two class 25’s were present, 5178 and 5157, the latter having a replacement cab fitted from withdrawn 5149.
1974
24150 was back at Glasgow Works during June, whlst 24147 visited during September & October.
1975
24148 worked the local Hexham pick up goods on January 30th.
The big inroads to the Class 24's in the summer included 24148, being stored in August and withdrawn during September. 24147 & 24150 were also affected, but only to the extent that they were transferred from Eastfield to Haymarket during August. Withdrawn 24148 moved to Carlisle Kingmoor joining many other members of the fleet there.
The infamous 1E83 17.10 Edinburgh – Newcastle continued to operate with a variety of motive power during September with 55004 (8th), 24110 (15th) & 24147 (19th). Other workings reported include on October 6th 24128 working the 17.30 Edinburgh – Cardenden, the next day 24147 handled the 17.52 Dundee – Queen Street throughout.
1976
During April 24147 was stored at Haymarket, because of minor collision damage (?), by July it had been withdrawn, and was moved from Haymarket to Carstairs.

24150 was stored during October/November, initially at Millerhill.
1977
During 1977 the three featured locomotives were finally moved from storage to Works for breaking up. During the third week of June 24103/112/113/150 moved from Millerhill to Doncaster, 24147 was at Doncaster by September and 24148 finally moved from Carlisle to Doncaster on October 26th accompanied by 24001 & 24072.
By December all three were but memories.

 | On an unknown date 24147 still sports green livery. It also carries the rather unusual headcode box fairing - in place of the rectangular box is this 'one-off', which actually can be found on several Class 24/1's & 25/0's. Photograph courtesy Ian Mawson |
