SHOULDA BEEN

"Life's like a movie; write your own endings.

Keep believing, keep pretending…"

-

Jim Henson

Author's Note:  The Muppet show ran for 5 seasons from 1976 to 1981 and was shown in more than 100 countries.  Guest appearances included Christopher Reeve, Gene Kelly, Dizzy Gillespie, Lynn Redgrave, John Cleese, Alice Cooper, Julie Andrews, Rudolf Nureyev, Diana Ross, and Steve Martin to just name a few of the varied stars that visited.

Which leads us to this bit of whimsy, a magical, silly what if…  Just suppose it had been on in 1971 and two certain actors in a new hit western got a chance to visit?

Suspend belief, disconnect common sense and just imagine…

"Kermit!  KERMIT!"  Fozzie races backstage clearly distraught.  Not that Fozzie isn't always distraught, but at times even he out does his sense of panic.

"Fozzie calm down what is it?" Kermit says more exasperated than worried.  You can't lead the Muppets and put on a show each week without gaining a little perspective.

"Outlaws!  They just rode up!  They're after the payroll!  We gotta hide!"

"Fozzie we don't have any payroll, well none worth robbing are you sure it was outlaws?"

            "Of course I'm sure!"

Seemingly Peter Duel aka Hannibal Heyes and Ben Murphy aka Kid Curry come up behind Fozzie in costume from their series right down to the hard wear.  Heyes pushes back his hat and listens with Kid.

"Were they about this tall?" Kermit says pulling out two wanted posters and then looking directly at the two men and indicating the height of the two men.  "With six guns and chaps and bandannas…"  'Murphy' and 'Duel' check out each other nodding in agreement.  This does sound like outlaws.

            "Yes!  Yes!  That was them!"

"They have horses?"  Kid asks trying to help.

Fozzie looks at him, doesn't register they are the men he just saw ride up, "I think so."

"Sound wanted to me," 'Peter' says nodding.  "What else does that wanted poster say?"  He and 'Ben' lean over Kermit's shoulder reading.

"Wanted Dead or Alive…" Kermit reads.

"Were they alive?" Kid asks sincerely.

Fozzie thinks, "Yea, I'm pretty sure."  Leans over and begins reading wanted posters himself.  "Hannibal Heyes and Kid Curry…" starts reading descriptions to himself as he mentions certain words aloud he looks up at the two men.  '…dark hair…brown eyes,…….blond hair…blue eyes…"

            Both men smile.

Fozzie puts down wanted posters smiles turns and suddenly gets it.

            "KERMIT IT'S THEM!"

"Fozzie those aren't outlaws!  There are guest stars tonight Mr. Peter Duel and Mr. Ben Murphy."

"Kermit that is Hannibal Heyes and Kid Curry."

"Fozzie they're just actors that play outlaws," Kermit says putting a friendly arm around the two men who smile innocently….way too innocently.  "Now don't worry!  Oh I gotta open the show!"  Kermit races off excited, Fozzie back off suspicious.

'Duel' and 'Murphy' stand there, 'Duel' waves friendly as Fozzie looks back.

"Imagine thinking were outlaws," Heyes says amused.

            "Completely ridiculous," Kid agrees.

            "Got the dynamite?" Heyes says.

Kid grins and holds it up, "Got the floor plan of the bank next door?"

Heyes holds it up.  They both grin at each other and then the camera and then walk off.

"Funny us looking like those two actor fellas," Heyes says cheerfully.  "You think they can get out of that closet we locked them in?"

"Shouldn't be a problem," Kid says back just as cheerfully. "At least in an hour or two!"

                                                            ****************************

Kermit runs on stage waving his arms,  "It's the Muppet Show with our Very Special Guest Stars Mr. Peter Duel and Mr. Ben Murphy!"

Fozzie comes on catches Kermit as first act goes out.

"Kermit are you sure this is such a good idea?"

"Fozzie Mr. Duel and Mr. Murphy are very fine actors.  This is a coup having them on the show."

Heyes and Kid go by for their number, Heyes catches Kermit's arm.

"Oh Kermit were expecting some associates of our could you look after them when they arrive if were on stage?"

            "Associates?"  Kermit asks.

"Just the Devils' Hole Gang," Kid says cheerfully and they exit.

Kermit looks worried for the first time.

            "The Devil's Hole Gang?"

Fozzie gives him a look.  "Coup or Coocoo?"

Kermit is checking clipboard when Wheat (Earl Holliman) and Kyle (Dennis Fimple) enter.

            "Hey frog."

Kermit turns and stares into the barrel of Wheat's gun.

"Ah yes?" he says in a polite but shaky voice.

"Were the Devil's Hole Gang, well the most important part, rest is out back."

"Ah yes sir Mr. Heyes, I mean Mr. Duel…I mean…we have a rule around here about shooting frogs."

"A talking frog, Wheat you ever seen anything like it?" Kyle says impressed.

"Kyle, Wheat stop scaring Kermit," Heyes says coming off stage.

"Ah I'd better introduce the next act!" Kermit says hurrying off.

"Heyes how come were talking to frogs?"

"Because the bank is next door to his theater," Heyes explains.

"He thinks were a couple of actors," Kid says.

"You two? Actors?" Wheat makes a rude noise.

"Yea well let's just let him go on thinking that until you and the boys finish digging the hole from our dressing room into the safe," Heyes says pushing them up the stairs.

Several cows dressed as cowboys go by and say excuse me.

"This place is like a dream after a bottle of bad whiskey," Wheat says disgusted.

KID IS PRACTICING HIS FAST DRAW IN A CLEARING IN A FOREST.  A BUNCH OF CANS ARE LINED UP A LOG, TROUBLE IS THEY ARE MUPPET CANS AND KEEP TRYING TO GET OUT OF THE WAY.  AND WHEN THEY DO GET HIT THEY HAVE TO DO A TEN MINUTE DYING SCENE.

AS KID SHOOTS, MISS PIGGY COMES UP BEHIND HIM AND STARTS TO SING…

'THE BADDER-BUT-WANTED GUY'

(From Music Man - Meredith Wilson aka the Sadder but Wiser Girl for me)

MISS PIGGY

No proper, wholesome non lethal milk toast proclaimer of love for me

That kinda boy puts me to bed…to sleep...

Listen girls...

A boy flashing all that purity

Don't make me feel as safe as gun on bedpost security!

I want a man with lust to rile

Who carries me off and demands in style!

I swoon; I twirl for the fella who takes down my curls

I pounce; I slip for the fella who can bodice rip

I melt; I please, for the outlaw who won't let me tease

The badder, but wanted guy for me!

No boring, correct boy who kisses on the cheek, no ma'am!

I want a man who hunts and peeks!

Who carries off and makes knees weak

And like a safe knows just how to tweak…

I snarl, I hiss, if the hands roping me aren't gloved and his

I spark, I fizz, for the outlaw who knows where each barn is

I cheer, I rave, for the virtue he don't want to save

The badder but wanted guy for me

No shy and quiet pillar of society,  no thanks!

who sets me on a pedestal of piety instead of eyeing me up like a

bank!

Me, I need, the outlaw hot with lustful deeds,

Whose hands betray this seductions gonna last all day

Who grabs assured… and pulls me in

Like a poker pot he had to win!

Keep your Byrons with trembling lips

I prefer a man that can shoot from the hip!

The badder but wanted guy for me.

No inexperienced, just hand holder

I want a man who throws over the shoulder!

Sweaty fumbling hands I have no trouble resisting

I prefer the outlaw who's grins insisting

No wide-eyed, sanctimonious collector of women, No Sir!

Why, he's mounting me as a trophy, with an outlaw I could be

snuggling closely…

I flinch, I shy when the boy with the delicate air goes by

I smile, I grin when the man with a touch of sin walks in

I hope, I pray for Kid or Heyes to come this way

The badder but wanted guy's the guy for me

The badder but wanted guy for me!

KID TWIRLS GUN BACK INTO HOLSTER, MISS PIGGY POUNCES.

THEY GO DOWN IN A HEAP AS CURTAIN CLOSES.

                                                ****************************

Kermit yelling off stage, "And tell Gonzo not to get the dynamite wet!"

Sighs heavily and sits down exhausted.  Heyes comes up behind him.

"Not easy being leader of the gang is it?"

            Kermit shakes his head no.

MUSICAL NUMBER

(IT'S NOT EASY BEING LEADER AKA IT'S NOT EASY BEING GREEN! - Joe Rappos)

HEYES…

It's not that easy being leader;

Having to spend each day keeping others out of trouble

When I think of safes dropped off of cliffs and banks blown up to rubble

I wonder about that.

KERMIT…

It's not easy being leader.

It seems you have to do so many things at once.

And people tend to blame and yell and holler until you would rather not have bothered

And wish you were just like them

HEYES

But leader's make things run

And leader's make sure everything gets done

KERMIT

And leaders can make a difference and be great

And Leaders know how to keep going or to wait...

HEYES AND KERMIT TOGETHER

When leader is all there is to be It could make you wonder why, but why wonder why?

Wonder, I am leader and it'll do fine, it's beautiful!

And I think it's what I want to be.

BOTH SMILE AND SHAKE HANDS, THEY UNDERSTAND EACH OTHERr as Kyle and Lobo start to come down the stairs arguing.  Heyes fires his gun in the air.

            "Get back to work!"

They two run back in and slam the door shut.

"Mr. Heyes the Devil's Hole Gang seems to listen to you a lot better than my bunch does, do you think you could give me some pointers?" Kermit asks.

Heyes smiles, "Kermit it would be my pleasure!"

SETTING: Fozzie, Kermit, Kid and Heyes are trying to rob a train, but it's not going very well through the whole song. For one thing the train doesn't appear to be stopping as Gonzo is driving it and Rizzo is having too much fun with the whistle.

The 4 train robbers proceed to sing this together as they attempt to dynamite the track and stop the train before it hits them on the track...which is a real problem towards the end cause Fozze gets his foot caught.

(YOU GOT A FRIEND IN ME - RANDY NEWMAN…WITH A FEW CHANGES!)

KERMIT AND HEYES:

You've got a friend in me
You've got a friend in me
When the road looks rough ahead
And you're miles and miles
From your nice warm bed
You just remember what your old pal said
Kid, you've got a friend in me

KID AND FOZZIE:

(Kid gingerly takes dynamite away from Fozzie with a smile.Kermit & Heyes look relieved)

Yeah, you've got a friend in me
You've got a friend in me
You've got a friend in me
You've got troubles then

I've got 'em too
There isn't anything I wouldn't do for you
We stick together we can see it through
'Cause you've got a friend in me
(Yes you do)
Yeah, you've got a friend in me

FOZZIE

Some other folks might be
A little bit smarter than I am

KERMIT
Bigger and strong too
Maybe

KID
But none of them will ever put with you
The way I do

HEYES
Just me and you, partner
(
REALIZES WHAT HE SAID AND GIVES HIM A LOOK, WHICH KID IGNORES)

HEYES, KID, KERMIT AND FOZZIE
And as the years go by
Our friendship will never die
You're gonna see
It's our destiny
You've got a friend in me
Yeah!

Train is about to hit them, Kid fast draws shoots cardboard train cut out that falls over leaving Gonzo sitting on a stool looking blank and Rizzo yelling help a train fell on me.

Kid twirls gun back and he and Heyes walk off.

Kermit is impressed and walks off nodding, like that's how you end a western and Fozzie is frozen in awe.

Rizzo climbing out from under train.

"He killed our train! Can he do that? Better yet will he let me do that? Mr. Curry? Yo Mr. Curry!"

Rizzo runs off curtain drops.

Robin stands there amazed, "WOW!"

MUSICAL NUMBER

ROBIN, (KERMIT'S LITTLE NEPHEW) IS DRESSED LIKE A COWBOY AND SITTING ON A FENCE OF A CORRAL OUTSIDE A BUNK HOUSE.

HE BEGINS TO SING…

(MY HEROES HAVE ALWAYS BEEN COWBOYS- REDONE FOR OUTLAWS - ORIGINAL BY ED BRUCE)

I grew up a-dreamin' of bein' an outlaw
Lovin' the outlaw ways.
Pursuin' the life of my high-ridin' heroes,
I burned up my childhood days.
I learned all the rules of the six gun

Don't you wait for the posse too long.
Just take what you need from the trains, then leave them,
With the words of a sad country song.

My heroes have always been outlaws.
And they still are, it seems.
Sadly, in search of, but one step in back of,
Themselves and their fast-movin' schemes.

Outlaws are special with their own brand of misery,
From being alone too long.
You could die from the cold in the arms of a nightmare,
Knowin' well your best days are gone.

Pickin' up a bounty instead of my pen,
I let the words of my years fade away.
Old worn-out saddles, an 'old worn-out memories,
With no one and no place to stay.

My heroes have always been outlaws.
And they still are, it seems.
Sadly, in search of, but one step in back of,
Themselves and their fast-movin' schemes.

ROBIN EXITS AND LIGHTS COME UP TO REALIZE KID AND HEYES HAVE BEEN LISTENING.

(SONG 'MAMA DON'T LET YOUR BABIES GROW UP TO COWBOYS, CHANGED FOR OUTLAWS - Willie Nelson)

HEYES…

Mama don't let your babies grow up to be outlaws

Don't let 'em pick safes and with posses try their luck

Make 'em be doctors and lawyers and such

Mama don't let your babies grow up to be outlaws

They'll never stay home and they're always alone

Even with someone they love

KID

Outlaws ain't easy to love and they're harder to hold

Always casing a bank and taking the diamonds or gold

Tied down peacemakerss and old faded Levi's each night begins a new day

And if you don't understand him and he don't die young

He'll probably just ride away

KID AND HEYES TOGETHER

Mama don't let your babies grow up to be outlaws

Don't let 'em pick safes and with posses try their luck

Make 'em be doctors and lawyers and such

Mama don't let your babies grow up to be outlaws

They'll never stay home and they're always alone

Even with someone they love

HEYES

Outlaws like smoky saloons and clear mountain morning's

Sleepy sheriff's and greenhorn poker games lasting all night

And them that don't know him won't like him

KID

And them that do sometimes won't know how to take him

He ain't wrong he's just different but his pride won't let him do things to make you think he's right

SONG ENDS, KID AND HEYES EXIT.

KERMIT LOOKS AT THEM, HE'S FIGURED IT OUT.

"If you don't mind my saying so Mr. Curry, Mr. Heyes? I don't think you are cut out to be outlaws."

"Well we did have this little old lady tell us about this amnesty offer…" Kid says thoughtfully.

"Were just not sure it would work," Heyes explains.

"Well we'd be happy to put a good word in with the Governor for you," Kermit says.

Kid and Heyes look at each other.

"Might work, he might listen to a frog," Heyes says thoughtfully.

"Send the pig, he'll listen," Kid says with great conviction

"We'll think about it," Heyes smiles, "And don't worry about the bank we'll call the boys off."

            They leave.

            Kermit frowns, "Bank?"

Fozzie comes on holding a shotgun on Pete Duel and Ben Murphy in street clothes.

"I got them Kermit!  They were fixin to rob the bank!"

            Kermit looks at him, "Fixin?"

"Ah sorry were late it was the strangest thing…." Thinks about it and decides he really doesn't want to try and explain.  "Ah, I'm Pete Duel this is Ben Murphy," Peter says slightly confused.

"Your bear told us to stand and deliver," Ben says giving Fozzie an annoyed look.

"Kermit what is going on?" Fozzie asks.

"It's a long story, but it doesn't matter you're just in time for the finale!" Kermit says happily.

SONG ENDS

"Cue the sunset! Cue the sunset!" Kermit bellows, always the optimist.

Beeker runs out sunburnt and screaming as Professor Honeydew yells for him to come back while muttering about nuclear explosions sort of looking like sunsets.

Kermit sighs, "Well there went our big finale."

Ben and Peter look at each other as suddenly from off stage someone throws Gonzo a lighted bunch of dynamite.  Gonzo stands there grinning until Kermit sees it and grabs it from him and throws it to Fozzie who tosses it to Ben who throws it to Peter who heaves it over his shoulder.

"Hit the deck!" Peter orders.

Everyone dives down and as the smoke clears slowly gets up to see a beautiful real Wyoming sunset behind them now that the wall is gone.

Only Kermit sees Kid and Heyes wave and ride off, there work here now done.

"That must have been some fake dynamite," Peter says a little shell shocked.

Ben merely grins back, "I guess it wasn't wet!".

Kermit meanwhile is overjoyed, "WE'RE SAVED!!! CUE THE MUSIC!"

ALL THE MUPPETS GATHER AROUND PETER, BEN AND THE OTHER ACTORS FROM THE GANG.

EVERYONE BEGINS TO SING...

Hannibal Heyes and Kid Curry are sitting around a campfire in the middle of nowhere drinking coffee.  It is late at night and they have been talking for some time.

"All right we'll go see Lom in the morning and find out about this amnesty," Heyes says decision made.

"I sure hope were doing the right thing Heyes."

They roll over and go to sleep.

There is a stirring in one of the saddle bags and Rizzo peeks his head out.

"Aw come on guys one more job, I know this cheese factory…guys?  Guys?"
