November 14th 2009

A brief look at the 12LVA24 engine and its application to the Class 48's.

Well, Christmas is approaching and probably most of us have been severely challenged by the economic conditions of the last 18 months. Which means the season of giving many not be as prosperous as in Christmas's past. But one small publication which has recently hit the shops is a 96page soft cover book entitled 'Private Lines - the collection' by 45726. For the historian and those who appreciate succinct comments in the form of cartoons about recent events on the railways of the UK, this volume is recommended. The cartoons have been previously published individually, but are brought together in this volume. For GBP7.99 this is a modest price for a window into the events of the past 20 years that maybe make you think that British Railways did get a lot of things right, but being nationalised we were afraid to admit many of their successes.

Available through Ty Mawr Publications, or doing a search on Ebay using the book title.

October 31st 2009

Six views and a few brief notes added to the The Snowy Day page showing views in the Dava area during 1962/1963 and continuing additions to the Consett page with regard to the iron ore workings.

September 27th 2009

Autumn's approaching, the evenings are drawing in - time to take a look at some of the existing webpages with a view to overhauling/refreshing them. First on the block was The Tunstead/Great Rocks limestone workings featuring D5274 - D5279 & D7586. The page was reorganised, hopefully its a bit tidier, more organised with many pictures rescanned and new ones added. Its ironic to remember that these little Type 2's were hung out to dry on some tough block train workings, obviously the Tunstead/Great Rocks workings, but also the Class 24's on the Consett iron ore trains and to a lesser extent the Class 24's on the Bidston Dock - Shotton workings. Happy memories!!

August 28th 2009

A new page featuring a brief look at The Class 46's 1980 - 1984 - the last four years of the Class 46's in regular service.

A plug for the:
Standard Railway Wagon Co, Heywood Works

History, Wagon build and personal experience by David W Tandy

From Ty Mawr Publications (Steve Morris)

Size 8" x 6", 128 pages, colour and B&W pictures, history of the factory and very detailed information about the wagons built.

ISBN 0-9552354-2-1 Online ordering information can be obtained by typing the book title into an Ebay search and going to Steve's Ebay

As one who spent much time spotting during the 1970's and early 1980's this is a most useful volume for identifying many of those wagons that once seemed so familiar. Construction at the Works continued into 1992 so the book will appeal also to enthusiasts younger than me! The quality of the book is high, the pictures are well produced and the considerable amount of detail is well presented and does not overwhelm the reader.

July 17th 2009

An update to the Consett page featuring the iron service worked by the 9F's and Class 24's - more details added as a well as a recent look at the remains of the route.

Also many pictures have been resized/rescanned on 1960's/1970's B&W page from the files of Tony Sayer.

June 7th 2009

An update to the Detail Differences page with a look at the minor variants in the cab roof moulding affecting the Class 25/1 and Class 25/2 & 25/3 models.

I will be visiting the UK from June 17th to July 1st 2009, mostly based in the Derby area. Please drop me an email if you might be interested in meeting up.

June 3rd 2009

A new page featuring a brief look at 25228.

April 5th 2009

This year is the 50th anniversary of the introduction of D5032/24032, so I thought it was time to review the Class 24 webpages. Those individual pages featuring D5000 - D5054 (24001 - 24054) have been updated with additional notes and pictures, the remainder will be so treated over the next couple of weeks.

I don't normally plug websites, the search engines are better able to sort all that stuff out, but a recent newcomer is http://www.healeymills.co.uk, created by TOPS wizard Steve Harrison. More importantly though Steve is heading up a Round Britain Railride to assist the disabled children's charity WHIZZ-KIDZ, making a round Britain journey from June 4th - June 10th. If you are able to support Steve in this charitable venture please check out the Healey Mills website for more details. Thanks - David.

Also a possible answer to the switch of loco identity for D5025/24025.

Other pages continue to be updated here and there with views and notes.

January 10th 2009

The three Birkenhead/Liberia pages continue to be updated: Bank Hall, Edge Hill & Birkenhead 1960 - 1968, Edge Hill & Birkenhead 1968 - 1980, LAMCO operations in Liberia 1980 - 1988.

December 6th 2008

Hey!! Where did 2008 go? Seems like it only just started and now its drawing to a close. Here are a couple of new pages involving the memories of a BR driver from 1960 - 1980 in the Liverpool area, both steam and diesel memories: Bank Hall, Edge Hill & Birkenhead, then from 1980 to 1987 our driver did a little American style railroading on the LAMCO line in Liberia - no Sulzer action on this page, but the line did operate ex-BR Swindon railcars and several BR Class 08's. As usual both pages are unfinished, especially the Birkenhead page.

And finally a page on 25150 & 25151

September 13th 2008

Well I guess its time to get back into the swing of things now that summer is drawing to a close and the daylight hours become shorter.
One new page features 25146 , elsewhere minor updates continue to be made to a number of pages, including the Holbeck and Springs Branch pages & others too, I just can't remember which ones.

July 26th 2008

Well summer's here and its time to get out the buckets & spades and have a restful time on the beach - which means I don't know what pages I've updated recently.
One page updated is the: Derby station page , which was looking a little weary, its been rearranged now to a chronological format with improved scans and other detail.
A new page with absolutely no rail content is English Double Decker buses in the USA - my photos of exported English Double Decker buses here in the USA.
