The sixteen year career of D5020/24020 included allocations to the London Midland Region & Eastern Region.
Built Derby Locomotive Works. Allocations The frames for D5020 were laid down during the late spring of 1959 at Derby Works. D5020 was new to Ipswich (32B) on August 20th 1959. Further transfers were:
March 1961 to Stratford (30A). Renumbered April 1974. After withdrawal 24020 was stored at Reddish until February 15th 1977 when it was moved to Swindon Works, being broken up there by the first week of April 1977. Noted Derby Works April 1962. Highlights
1959 On August 31st D5020 was noted passing Claydon, en-route to Ipswich? Derby Works delivered D5020 new to Ipswich (32B) during August. A couple of months after delivery high winds plagued the east of England during the last week of October, on 27th D5020 was struck by a falling tree whilst on the East Suffolk lines. Condition new: green livery, frame level stripe, grey roof, full size fuel & water tanks, SKF axleboxes, ventilators 4/4 & 3/4 (BIS side), two-rung bogie mounted footsteps.
1961 D5020 recently transferred from the GE returned to its former haunts on August 7th in charge of a Bletchley - Southend excursion. At noon on August 25th D5020 was noted at Acton with a freight for the West London line.
1962 On May 31st D5020 was noted at South Hampstead with a local passenger service. On August 12th there were 46 locomotives stabled at Northampton including ED4, 12046 & D5020, D5025 & D5029. On the afternoon of November 3rd D5020 was at Willesden with a milk train.
1963 On the afternoon of June 1st D5020 was noted at Willesden. On the evening of September 1st D5020 was at Euston on empty coaching stock duty. Condition date uncertain (working Euston suburban service): green livery with small yellow warning panels, curved upper corners, warning panel only partially covers frame level stripe, full size fuel & water tanks, exhaust in original position, two-rung bogie mounted footsteps, ridged sandboxes, cantrail water filler cover in situ.
1964 On April 16th D5020 worked the 15.35 Northampton - Wetmore Class C freight. On the afternoon of May 12th D5020 was at Rugby with the 4L05 12.55 Broad Street - Carlisle freight.
1965 Condition February: green livery with small yellow warning panels, rounded upper corners, warning panel covers frame level stripe; gangway doors still in place, full size fuel & water tank, shortened water tank, valencing still in place, two-rung bogie mounted footsteps, ridge sided sandboxes, hand/footholds present. On September 9th D5020 worked the 21.01 Euston - Tring.
1966 D5020 was noted at Oxley on November 27th.
1967 On the morning of June 13th D5020 was light engine at Longton. On the morning of June 14th D5020 was on up empty coaching stock at Stoke on Trent. On the morning of June 24th D5020 was stabled at Chester.
1970 On the evening of July 1st 5020 was light engine at Crewe.
1971
1972 5020 was the Manchester Victoria banker (T43) on August 21st & 22nd. On August 26th 5020 was noted at Manchester Piccadilly with passenger stock. August - noted in blue/yellow livery.
1973 On the weekend of April 27th - 29th the Wirral Railway Circle operated the Grand Scottish Circular Tour with two trains, 'The Hebridean' and 'The Jacobite'. Both started at Crewe, with 'The Hebridean' (1Z37) destined for Kyle of Lochalsh, 'The Jacobite' (1Z38) for Mallaig. Passengers would swap the tour trains by using the CalMac ferry services between the ports of Mallaig & Kyle of Lochalsh.
Motive power was typical for the period, though unforseen incidents and failures caused delays.
For 'The Hebridean' haulage was: A reported suicide north of Penrith delayed the northbound Hebridean for about 150 minutes and no doubt also impacted the already late running Jacobite.
For 'The Jacobite' haulage was: With the abandonment of the LMR Divison allocations 5020 was allocated to Longsight during May. 5020 was the Manchester Victoria banker (T42) on June 11th, 20th & 22nd. At about 6pm on June 28th 5020 was noted at Manchester Exchange on a down van train (4P05). 5238 & 5020 worked the 09.20 Manchester Piccadilly - Great Yarmouth to Lincoln on July 14th, returning with the 09.15 Yarmouth - Manchester Piccadilly . 5020 was the Manchester Victoria banker (T42) on July 17th. 5020 was the Manchester Victoria banker (T42) on August 8th & 9th. At about 6pm on August 29th 5020 was noted passing Ashton Moss with a down freight. 5020 was the Manchester Victoria banker (T42) on September 7th. For a couple of hours on the afternoon of October 6th 5020 was busy at Manchester Victoria shunting parcels vans and various light engine movements. At about 7am on October 31st 5020 was noted passing Manchester Victoria with a down freight. 5020 was the Manchester Victoria banker (T42) on October 31st. 5020 was the Manchester Victoria banker (T42) on November 1st, 2nd, 9th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 16th, 19th, 23rd & 26th. 5020 was the Manchester Victoria banker (T42) on December 3rd, 4th, 5th & 7th.
1974 At about 6pm on May 3rd 24020 was noted passing Ordsall Lane with an up van train. On the early afternoon of May 11th noted at Manchester Victoria were 24021 light engine down working and 24020 with a down parcels train. On June 15th 24020 & 24021 were stabled together at Newton Heath. Noted at Manchester Victoria on August 5th were 24020, 24024, 24025, 24027 & 24035. 24020 was the Manchester Victoria banker (T42) on September 3rd & 12th. 24020 was noted at Guide Bridge about 1pm on September 19th. On the afternoon of October 23rd 24020 was noted at least twice at Manchester Victoria, working through with a parcels train, then returning light engine, then later passing through with parcels vehicles and others. On December 18th noted throughout the day at Manchester Victoria were 24020, 24022, 24023 & 24024. On December 19th 24020 was noted at Manchester Victoria. 24020 was the Manchester Victoria banker (T42) on December 20th.
1975 24020 was noted at Manchester Victoria on February 7th. 24020 was the Manchester Victoria banker (T42) on February 10th & 11th. On February 12th & 13th 24020 was noted at Manchester Victoria. On Sunday February 16th three pairs of Type 2s as light engines were noted pasing through Manchester Victoria: 25318 + 25147, 24021 + 24027 and 24020 + 24026, all presumed to/from permanent way duties. 24020 was the Manchester Victoria banker (T42) on March 5th & 6th. Class 24s noted at Manchester Victoria on March 7th included 24020/023/024/027/052/055 & 24140. On March 9th 24020 was noted at Manchester Victoria. At about 6pm on March 14th 24020 was noted passing Manchester Victoria with an up freight whilst 24023 was on the banking duty. On May 12th, 15th & 16th 24020 was noted at Manchester Victoria. 24020 was the Manchester Victoria banker (T42) on July 2nd, 3rd & 4th. Was this one of the last duties carried out by 24020? In the big purge of the Class 24s during the summer of 1975 24020 was placed into store at Reddish during the first week of July and then withdrawn on August 10th. Condition final: blue/yellow livery, gangway doors still in place, full size fuel tank, shortened water tank, some valencing still in place, two-rung bogie mounted footsteps, straightsided sandboxes, blanking plates fitted, hand/footholds plated over.
